Children and Sports: How Can We Nurture A Growth Mindset?

Instilling a growth mindset in your child’s every day repertoire is vitally advantageous. Not only is it beneficial during their education, but also when participating in sports as well. Too often, we worry about the result rather than the effort. We as educators and parents, should be praising the effort, hard work and the improvement, so that children enjoy the pathway of sport and in turn, develop a growth mindset.
Time for a test! – Which ‘C’ do you use?
Avoid saying (critising) …
- ‘You should’ve kicked that goal in the 2nd’ (fixed mindset)
Try saying (constructive) …
- ‘You almost got a goal, but my advice to you next time, would be to take a few more steps in your run up.’
Our brain is a sponge! It absorbs the mistakes, learns from them and grows stronger in the process. This is what you should be mindful of, next time you are watching your child participate in sport.
Mistakes are good! They will help your child succeed! Growth Mindset is the key!
